The Shar Pei is commonly known as the Chinese Wrinkle Dog.
The origins of this wrinkly dog can be traced to China, though no one can be sure of the exact lineage. Some believe there’s a tie to the Chow because both have purple tongues and some dogs carry their tails like a Chow.
What many people don’t realize is that there was apparently a purpose for the selective breeding that created the extra folds of skin on this dog. Centuries ago, Shar Peis were used for dog fighting. Other dogs had difficulty grabbing and holding those loose folds of skin and the Shar Pei could slip out of their grasp.
The folds of skin make the Shar Pei a unique looking dog. This favors people who are looking for an unusual pet. Despite those early breeders who used the Shar Pei as a fighting dog, the Shar Pei of today tends to be very relaxed. They can be protective at times, but most of the dogs of this breed are simply easy-going canines that are very tolerant.
That tolerance is especially afforded to family and close friends who interact with the dog often. But these dogs tend to be “one-man canines.” They often favor the person who handles and cares for them most and sometimes simply refuse to acknowledge commands from other people.
The unique look of these dogs have made them popular on social media. But this has led to problems. In some cases, puppy farms have turned out massive numbers of Shar Pei puppies without proper regard to screening. This has produced dogs with behavioral problems because of poor bloodlines and poor care of dogs. Pups from reputable breeders should therefore be preferred above all else. A reputable breeder can demonstrate the good breeding of the Shar Pei and give advice about their parentage and traits.
The unusual skin folds that attracted so many people to be Shar Peis is ironically the reason they also abandon them. Some Shar Pei have skin problems, not due to the wrinkles, but simply as part of their genetic makeup. Extra care of their wrinkled coats doesn’t necessarily solve the problems they get with their skin. Also, as the dog ages, there are less wrinkles. This leaves some people disenchanted with the dogs. So, if you want a Shar Pei, be prepared for the possibility of extra work with skin care. Then you will be rewarded with a loyal and kind dog that can be a loving member of your family.
